Lacking the motivation to write...

Not only have I had writer's block lately, but I have lacked the motivation to write. I'm not sure why this is. It couldn't have come at a worse time, as I am 32,000 words into book three of the Neighborhood Watch series. I get up early every morning with every intention of putting some words on the Google Doc, but some kind of gravitational pull drags me away from doing it.

Perhaps it's my own version of senioritis as I try to crawl toward the finish line of the 2024-2025 school year. Something that was once fun and such an escape has lately seemed like a chore.

Instead of writing in my free time, I have worked through several virtual crossword puzzles. I have gotten quite good at them, and my best time solving one is 46 seconds, with my average around 2-3 minutes. I keep up with my reading, and I just finished The Book Thief, an interesting take on World War II and the Holocaust, which is told through a young German girl's eyes and interrupted by a strange Death character as the narrator. It is meant to show the reader that not everything is black and white, as her German family are Jewish sympathizers, and the Death narrator is scared by the inhumane nature of human beings.

Stephen King said in his book On Writing that you should read every day and write 2,000 words each day as well. That's a little easier when your full-time occupation is an author, but things get harder when you're a teacher with young kids at home (at least during the school year). By the end of May, my brain is fried, and anything that takes the semblance of any real work seems daunting.

I can only hope that when school lets up, I can find my groove again. At least I am typing this, as this post is the first thing I have written in about a month. It's not much, but it's a start. Perhaps tomorrow I will write more. Until then, hang tight, dear Reader.
